You've said a resounding 'YES!' and that engagement ring is sparkling… it's official: you're getting married! This is an incredibly exciting time, filled with dreams and Pinterest boards. However, you'll quickly realize the wedding planning is officially underway, and you're facing a significant number of decisions. So, the key question becomes: where do you even begin to organize everything?
No need to panic! It's easy to get overwhelmed with wedding planning early on. These first 5 steps will set you up for a smooth, enjoyable start.
1) Dream big (or small)
From venues to florals, the options can feel endless. Before you get lost in all the details, it's smart to define the overall vision for your day. Grab a cup of coffee or tea and start brainstorming together. Are you hoping for a grand celebration, or do you dream of an intimate destination wedding in the mountains? Do you lean towards a relaxed festival vibe or a chic dinner with long tables? And will your wedding last half a day or span three? Jot down all your initial ideas.
Bonus tip: Take 10 minutes to sit down individually and jot down your top 5 non-negotiable 'must-haves' for the wedding day. Then, compare your lists. The points that overlap form the true essence of your celebration.
2) Setting a budget
This might not be the most romantic conversation, but it's absolutely essential. Before you set your heart on a grand ballroom or that dream dress, you need a clear understanding of your financial boundaries. Discuss your possibilities together. You don't need to pinpoint an exact figure yet, but establishing a realistic budget range is crucial. And here's some encouraging news: you can absolutely plan a beautiful wedding without an extravagant budget!
3) Number of guests
You don't need to finalize your guest list right now. However, it's wise to establish a preliminary guest estimate. This step is particularly important when you start touring venues; knowing if you need to accommodate 20 or 150 guests will simplify your search. So, work together to create a rough list and see what number you arrive at.
To make things a little easier, you can divide the preliminary list into three categories:
➜ The A-list: people you definitely want to be at your wedding
➜ The B-list: close friends and family
➜ The "maybe's"
This immediately clarifies your guest count, giving you a firm minimum and maximum number to work with. This range is essential for your next big planning decisions.
4) Determine your preferred timeframe
One common mistake many couples make is locking in a specific wedding date too early. This severely limits your venue options right from the start. Instead, I suggest you first choose a preferred month or even a season. For example, are you dreaming of an outdoor reception? Or does a cozy winter celebration sound more like your style? Perhaps a particular month, like March, holds special meaning for you. Decide on that preference first. Then you can begin your venue search. Once you've found the perfect place, ask them for available dates within your chosen timeframe.
5) Document the key decisions
The wedding venue is usually the first step. That’s why you need to secure it early, because venues fill up quickly, especially during peak seasons or on popular dates (such as 03/03/30).
Next, let's consider the support you'll need for this journey. Do you plan to handle every single detail yourself, taking full charge of the wedding preparations? Or would you prefer a wedding planner to guide you through the entire process? If bringing in a professional expert sounds right for you, here's a crucial tip: involve them from the very start. Early involvement ensures they truly understand your vision and can offer their best support, often saving you significant time and stress.
There’s one more person you shouldn’t wait too long to book: the photographer and/or videographer. If you’ve found someone whose style appeals to you, I recommend scheduling an introductory meeting with them as soon as possible. That way, you’ll avoid missing out!
